What is advocacy and what does it have to do with business? We’re about to tell you.

In this episode of the Be Moore Mindful podcast, co-hosts Carrolee Moore and Melanie Rice are joined by The Spirit of Frisco, Tammy Meinershagen who is the first ever Asain-American city council woman in Frisco, TX. Together they dive deep into the importance of advocacy, the mindset shift that happens when you become an advocate, the mindset of dealing with childhood issues that have driven you to advocate, and how all of that ties into business.

Tammy opens up about times in her childhood that shaped her desire to become an advocate, from being bullied in school for the way she spoke & feeling ashamed of that, to turning those moments into a mindset that no other kid should feel that way. Tammy created programs in her early career, like the Multi Cultural Minute that’s still in place today, to help kids be proud of who they are, their cultures and bring awareness to those not familiar with those cultures. Programs that co-host Carrolee Moore voiced she wished she had growing up.

In the world of advocacy, it’s not about the haves and have nots it’s the do and do not. You either do it or you don’t and it never happens and how mindset is key here. Being stuck in a mindset of I grew up a certain way so I could never start a successful business. Wrong. Sometimes, often times, it’s not entirely about skill. It’s just because you did it. In a world like today where a lot of things seem messed up, this episode covers the mindset of not getting bogged down by those things, but embracing them to change the world by doing what you can. Not letting the world make you feel like you can’t.

One of the key concepts talked about in this episode is “Do it scared”. Whether you’re sure you’re going to make it or not, do it scared. Tammy shares the times where she’s done it scared and how it’s worked out in her favor. If she hadn’t done it scared, she may not be where she is today. In fact, neither would co-hosts Carrolee and Mel.

When something scares you, it doesn’t mean its wrong, sometimes it means it’s actually the one thing you’re meant to do. And failure can be a part of that, co-hosts Carrolee and Melanie discuss with Tammy the idea of failing forward and how failure is a season, not permenance.

Now how does this tie into business and entreprenuership? The best businesses will do well and do good. Is the purpose of your business to make a lot of money? That’s great but think beyond that. In this episode Carrolee, Melanie and Tammy discuss how advocating for something, using your resources to help the community can actually grow your business. When you’re doing well and doing good, there’s more opportunity for what you can do. Tammy explains that there’s so much more you can do, if you do good with it and that’s lasting, that’s not just a business, it’s a legacy.
